Browncoat Trekkie Do you know the difference between "Trekkies," "Trekkers" and "Trekkists?" I do. Looking to socialize over science fiction. Plenty of male co-nerds but not so many lady nerds to compare notes with.
I started on Trek with the first episode of the first season of the original series sitting at my Dad's side and taking it in as the Future, baby. Since then I've embraced Start Wars and Firefly, BSG (the new series) and Alphas.
All things considered, I think "Firefly" may be the best sci fi series to date, but it does not have the same sociological clout Trek did. TOS seems "dated" when watched with dramatic timing ruined by chopping for added commercials in syndication, and seems comical since others have done the same things better since then, but too few people know or recall that Trek caused changes so great that, by the time TNG rolled around the sensibilities of TOS were no longer fringe, but mainstream. TOS was in the face of racism, warmongering, etc. When Picard and crew (and I love them) got here most of the really toughest issues had already been spanked by Kirk and his posse. So TOS is profoundly meaningful, and when watched uncut retains a surprisingly heavy significance. (I possess a digital copy of every episode of every series, including the animated) and every movie, plus three documentaries, bloopers and "Free Enterprise.")
But Mal and his folks are Big Damn Heroes and, on a very broad scale, supplied a more entertaining product that still had compelling meaning, so it has barely edged Trek for my favorite. I also deeply like and enjoy Star Wars IV, V and VI. The last three abortions are slaps in the faces of the fans that made Lucas rich.
