roddenberry's captivating vision of the future is poetic enough to suppose that humanity will thrive for centuries and all but eradicate hunger, conflict, and greed via applied technology, but pragmatic enough to assume that such an evolved society could resist complacency and endeavor to seek new galactic horizons in much the same ways our ancestors desired to master terrestrial ones. aesthetically or conceptually, arguably no other work of fiction, regardless of medium, had a more profound and diverse influence on our standards and expectations of human achievement. i feel that ds9 represents a pinnacle of atmosphere, nuance, and continuity for not just star trek, but episodic television drama as a whole.
