When I was a boy, I hated going to bed. So when my mom left to go to work at night, I would go downstairs and want to spend time with my dad. I didn’t care what he was doing; I just wanted to be with him. And more often than not, he would be watching Star Trek. So I would just cuddle up with him and watch Star Trek night after night. It became our thing. And I took it and ran with it. It became a symbol of our connection. Watching it made me want to be a part of something bigger. I always wanted to be a healer from watching Dr. Crusher, Dr. McCoy, and Dr. Bashir (didn’t help that my dad is one as well and I hero worshipped him), but it also made me want to join the military. Though that didn’t work out, I still took my passions and made a life for myself. Star Trek had so many themes, symbols, messages, allegories, etc that propelled me into a life of loving science, philosophy, history, and deeper meanings. And the more I watch it as I get older, it holds deeper meanings. Watching for instance DS9 strikes me so much harder now that I’m a father and I resonate so much with Sisko than I ever had before. I love rewatching all the classics and seeing how things look as I get older and wiser, and I still love sharing it with my father as much as I can. I hope one day my girls will love it with me, so we will see.
