Posted: Post subject: What Are Your Ideas For A New Star Trek TV Series? |
|
|
So if you had a chance to create the next Star Trek TV series, what would be your ideas or more importantly the promise of the new series? Mine would take place 150 years after Next Generation where the Federation has the technology to travel to another galaxy (given to them by a mysterious alien race). So the Federation and it's allies decide to mount a 3 ship expedition to explore this new galaxy. One would be a Klingon Battle Cruiser, another Vulcan and the latest Federation ship specifically build for this mission. Not sure if I would call it "Enterprise" at this point, but I might change my mind out of tradition. Some episodes will sometimes focus on characters from the other ships. Like the (female) Klingon captain or the main Vulcan Science officer, even giving the spotlight to a rookie Ensign on his first mission. Of course they'll be action, adventure, but more in the traditional sense of the original series. Realistically it will probably cost a lot of money for Paramount to make, since you have to have sets for three ships, but Paramount gets their money back from Star Trek merchandise anyway.
So what are your ideas, or what would you like to see? |

I would stay in the established Next Generation universe for the time being, but I would base the whole show around Section 31. I think there's great potential for an "op-center" type of show where the main characters are operatives, with some sort of spy-master at the center to take the place of the traditional Captain. It wouldn't be the typical Trek we're used to, but I think the Trek universe and fans are grown-up enough now to see a series based on the darker side of Trek. We got to see some hints of this in DS9 and I feel it was some of the best work to date. Does Section 31 have its own ships? Perhaps; maybe they have a small fleet of vessels stolen from various races and modified for their use. Maybe they have some "decommissioned" ships that have been "salvaged" from the scrapyard. Even if they had no ships at all there's still nearly unlimited possibilities for suspense and intrigue as operatives mess with other races and governments and work behind the scenes of the spit-and-polish world of mainstream Trek. |

I would also center the series around the current Next Gen universe. However i would take it in a completely new direction. Inspired heavily by Joss Whedons firefly i would set the new series aboard an old ship occupied by traders and smugglers who stay out of the way of the Klingons, Starfleet and Romulans. Taking any job they could to earn their latinum it would allow a whole host of new story routes to be opened. Whats life like for people trying to earn a living away from the perfect lifestyle depicted in Starfleet. A captain who after wolf 359 left starfleet and decided to fend for himself and picked up a crew as he goes along. Maybe a klingon and a ferengi a part of the rag tag gang. Hopefully you get the idea. |

I like that idea a lot, whatever the next show is it needs to borrow from what Ron Moore's done with Battlestar Gallactica and what Joss Wheedon tried to do with Firefly. We need an arc of a story with characters that grow and change.
Has anyone read the Peter David New Frontier books? What about Nathan Fillion as Captain Calhoun? I think it could make a cool TV series, we've got a starship show, we've got unexplored space, we've got the rise and fall of empires which worked very well for B5. And lots of non human characters that are always interesting. |

Well...my first one would be set way in the future. Anybody remember Captain Braxton and his time ship? He can't have been the only one and indeed later episode of Voyager proves there was an entire group dedicated to preserving time. Gotta be some interesting stories there.
Or, there is a whole series of books on the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. I've always been partial to Scotty and LaForge myself so I think it would make a great series. |

Many people might think I'm picking nits (they did bloom early this year) but I think you need to focus on how, not just what you want to do.
For example: the Galaxy class is the goofiest, most weirdly disproportionate, ugliest ship in the Next-Gen realm, worse than even the "giant flying waffle iron of death" and I tell you I'm not the first person to say out loud that Voyager looks like a..."marital aid".
Sleek ship, very important---as the chef will tell you, people take their first bite with their eyes.
Theme music: sets the tone, gets you in the mood for adventure; Enterprise has the most inappropriate theme song EVER!

How about Captain Nog of the Defiant---come on, who's with me?
No one?
Okay, I'll sit down and be quiet now. |

I want a show within the Starfleet academy. I always thought it would be cool to have a show that had like the academy elite, you know students who were teh top of their class and were selected for a new, more hands on, extracurricular school regimen. Basically, they were teh top of their fields and were given the chance to design their own ship and such and had to go through all the assignments with it. You know like the Kobyashi Maru and such. Maybe after two seasons or so they all graduate and we see that all their planning wasn't for nothing. They are the first official Starfleet elite force or what not. They are, what I thought would be cool, the Delta force. Wow, I had forgotten about that idea until I read this post..I'm gonna have to work on that. |

bad idea. a whole show full of wesley crushers. and you know the space and monsters would take second place to dating and 'cominig of age' stories. |

I think it might be interesting to have a series based on colonizing a new world. Maybe in a disputed area of space to make conflict more likely.
Personally I liked the way that, when DS9 and Voyager were introduced, they were tied to the previous series: DS9 carried on the story of the Bajorans and Cardassians introduced in TNG and Voyager started out with trying to find the Maquis. There are a lot of things touched on in all the series that could be expanded into series of their own.
A section 31 series could be interesting. The idea of having a Starfleet security focus has also occurred to me, with the Orion Syndicate as the main villains. There's a danger it would end up being Law & Order: Star Trek, though. One could also do a show based on Starfleet medical, but something like that was already tried. (Anybody remember a show called Mercy Point? It was a sci-fi medical show. I think it lasted 2 or 3 episodes.)
Of course any ideas people have for series would also be good, if not better, as books. |
