Sarah Jane's new teenage neighbor, Maria, stumbles upon Her "Hobby"
Using her contacts as a reporter, Sarah Janes is basicly doing a private Torchwood with less Killing. So, now Maria, Her friend Clyde and Sarah Jane's Adopted Son , Luke, Help out. Oh, Did I mention Luke is a highly intelagent, alien grrown, human created to test mind control soda on.

I saw the episode shortly after it had aired in the UK. I had terrible visions of it being a rehash of "K-9 and Company" but thankfully the SJSA looks like it will be light-years better. Why? Well, first of all there's almost no K-9 in it. Ok, the metal dog is "cute" for about 5 minutes (if that) of screen time and then he's just annoying. Bravo to RTD for sticking K-9 in an cubbard so we rarely have to see or hear him.
I was a bit surprised at the storyline when I saw it, because I knew it was supposed to be geared toward kids I was expecting something on par with "Phil of the Future" but this was a lot more intelligent than that.
The "artificial" kid Sarah Jane adopts, though, feels a bit like a blatant rip-off of ABC Family's series "Kyle XY" (if you haven't seen it, he's also brilliant and has no belly button).
Some of my friends were actually serving a drink they called "Bane" at a sci-fi convention room party not long after the pilot aired in the UK. Not surprisingly, only the few people who'd seen it got the reference. LOL
Despite the fact the Beeb insists it was a "Holiday Special" and NOT a "Pilot Episode," I've also read online that there has been some minor re-casting for the actual series run.
I know they probably don't want to draw any straight lines between SJSA and Torchwood (given that one is a kids' show and the other "adults only"), but darn it, I want to see Torchwood-types sniffing around that attic full of alien artifacts!

I really did enjoy the SJSA pilot and am looking forward to seeing their Slitheen episode. She was always one of my favorite companions on Doctor Who.
