Poltergeist Remake Coming-Yet another unnecessary remake!!!!

An anonymous source told the Disgusting Web site that the proposed sequel film Poltergeist: Kayeri has been shelved in favor of a shot-for-shot remake of the original 1982 film. "I've just received official confirmation that the original idea for Kayeri will not be used for the remake," the source said. "Instead, the new film will be a straight-up remake of the first film. Pretty much frame-for-frame. Just think Hills Have Eyes."

According to the site, screenwriter Clint Morris, who wrote the script for Poltergeist: Kayeri, will not be involved in the new project. The source also confirmed that original cast members Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams and Zelda Rubinstein will not appear in the remake.

The original Poltergeist, produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, centered on a family who moves into a new housing development and discovers that their home is built over an ancient burial ground inhabited by angry spirits. The film spawned two theatrical sequels and a television series, which ran from 1996 to 1999.

Okay, first off, The Hills Have Eyes was NOT a frame by frame remake. It was the same premise, but there is a lot of difference and it is one of the few remakes that works. It might even be a little superior to the original.

Second, the only reason to do a remake, other than make money, is to give it a different perspective, creatively. Make something fresh and new out of an old story. Most remakes fail dreadfully in that regard, but I give the creator credit for trying. But, remakes like The Omen and Psycho really do nothing different with the story or add anything fresh to the originals (with the exception of Mia Farrow's wonderfully creepy performance in the former) that make the remake worth watching.

I am always far more likely to be interested ina remake if they tell me they are going to do something different with it than to try to redo it exactly the same. Of course, I am generally not thrilled with the ideas of remakes in the first place, as some will recall from previous posts. But, I will take a shot on something different. This one sounds like something that will make it into my Netflix queue, but not into my theater-going budget.

The Psycho remake comes to mind when I read something like this, that was practically a shot by shot movie and a terrible one at that. There have been some good remake in the past five years like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead, Hills Have Eyes. The remakes of Amityville Horror, The Omen, When a Stranger Calls and The Fog fell very short in even going up to the same level as the originals. It all comes down to who's directing, writing, and producing the next remake that will decide if it will be a hit or miss.

I agree with you on all of those movies. Dawn of the Dead and Hills probably being the best of those remakes. I haven;t seen When a Stranger Calls yet. Didn't seem like to make a big effort to see.

One good thing is that I saw a news story a few days ago that said Spielberg's office has said the new Poltergeist is a sequel and NOT a remake, so maybe it has potential after all.
