I would never have heard of Trek Passions if I had not been watching the msnbc program Countdown with Keith Olberman.

Olberman was kind enough to repeat a joke made by Conan O'Brian (who should not be making fun of anyone, really) about this site.

Looks like the joke's on them, don't you think?

I didn't know there was a joke. I found the site becasue a friend sent an e-mail as an "OMG!! I can't believe it's REAL" thing.

What can I say. I checked the site, am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Geekette, a self described "dork" and like to talk with people who like the same stuff. So, here I am

If you dress up in a costume or make-up and go to a football game, you are a sports nut and that is manly. If you do the same thing at sci fi cons, you are a geek. LOL I challenge ANY of those media people to come and try to keep up with me for the whole weekend at Dragon Con!

BTW, this is my first post, so "Howdy!"

If you want to help out this site get the word out. Put the Trek Passions url in your Blogs, Myspace, message boards, and email it to a friends. Even mention it at a convention or two, the more people we get to visit the better.

The Conan O'Brien joke was actually pretty funny.

He said something along the lines of 'A group of Star Trek fans have created an online dating site called Trek Passions'.

The crowd then erupted in laughter...as if the very concept was the joke.

He then said 'The site is doing really well, and any month now, they hope a girl will join.'

As far as we're concerned, any mention on national television is good, so if David Letterman or Jay Leno happens to read this and wants to make fun of the site too, please do!!!!

Sports fans
So Kathleen happened to have the radio on this morning, tuned to a sports radio talk show. And it seemed that the volume and intensity of the discussion was inversely proportional to the degree of importance-in-the-grand-scheme-of-things that the subject matter had.

And all I could think of was how grotesquely unfair it is that science fiction and comics fans are tagged as nerds and dweebs and treated in a condescending manner when sports fans are just as "bad" if not "worse." I mean, where the hell does the media get off being snotty about fans who are dressed as Klingons when you can go to any Yankees game and see 1800 guys wearing jerseys that say "Jeter" on the back. The Klingon language may be incomprehensible, but no less so than watching two sports fanatics tossing around stats, names and abbreviations ("When he wasn't able to DH he was HBP and wound up on the DL when his ERA was 0.73, or else he would have been MVP.") How is it 1500 people, mostly sober, spending a weekend enjoying a mutual interest at a hotel and talking about space exploration, how to avoid global warming, and whether the Hulk can beat Superman...how is that automatically inferior to 43,000, mostly drunkly drunk, spending a day enjoying a mutual interest at a stadium and talking about playoffs, how to avoid the line at the bathroom, and whether the 1953 Dodgers could beat the 1962 Yankees?

Plus science fiction fans have only the Sci-Fi Channel. Sports fans have ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN Classic. Golf. There's a golf channel. A whole channel dedicated to Golf, for God's sake. That's like having a whole channel devoted to "Voyager." And how are fantasy baseball leagues any weirder than local chapters of Starfleet? And where do people get off being snotty about Renfaires when there are those fantasy baseball camps that some organizations offer, where you pay big bucks to dress up like a baseball player for a week? At least Renfaire's don't set you back a few thousand bucks.

So what makes us nerdy and them "mainstream? Because it's "big business?" Maybe the only way science fiction and comic book conventions will gain genuine respectability is if they become designed, not for socialization or debate, but about being as aggressive as possible about separating fans from their money. You know: LIke pro sports.

That is so true.

I was talking to some of my "normal" friends and I mentioned that I was attending the SG covention in Chicago this summer. One of them said, "That's nice. Now you know that there are going to be some weirdo's dressing up." I looked at her, straight faced, and said, " Then I'm one of those weirdo's. I'm gonna be dressed as an member of an SG team." Her face went from pale to red in five seconds flat. Had I been talking about a Packer's game I was going to go to, she would have helped me come up with ideas.

I actually grew up a HUGE sports fan, and still am. I just have discovered I like Scifi and Progressive Rock as much if not more. But I can understand, altho I will admit..growing up I liked Star Wars and some others, but as a whole, I did not see myself as a Trekky. So getting into ST was a big leap for me.

I mean I still play fantasy football. And my dad and brother are both into sports, so it gives us a fun thing to talk about. And I do listen to sports talk radio..but eventually too much of one thing can get boring...like in Minnesota, there are people who can't get enough of the Vikings. And at some point I just stop listening to the talk shows..it's like beating a dead horse. But on the flip side, when I have watched a marathon of DS9 or been to a ProgRock festival, watching a Timberwolves game is a great change of pace.

I don't think I'd ever dress up..beyond wearing a t-shirt or something..I always wanted to get one of those Bajoran earrings. Costumes are a bit too much $ for me at this point, plus I'm more of an admirer. I do attend Ren Fest and the Cons to admire..esp the women who seem to dress to be admired..hehe..cleavage of course

Oh I am a definite sports fan. Especially during baseball season and football season. I have Atlanta Braves shirts, hats, etc. No one ever comments on those when I wear them in public. But, let me wear a Star Trek, KISS, or Vampire The Masquerade t-shirt and that attracts attention. KISS to a lesser degree. LOL

It is just, for me, I am passionate about just about everything. My quote line under my signature is my own quote (I think) and it is my motto for life.

I believe Sci-fi chicks do exist. I do, I do. It's my love life that doesn't exist. Guess not even a sci-fi chick can be attracted to a monkey like me. LOL

Minbari girls you make the galaxy go round...oh, sorry, just messin' with some Queen lyrics this time.

So, anyone ever heard of those incredibly manly men, the Hoggettes?
Grown men in women's clothing and hog snouts---I believe they root for the Washington Redskins.
Makes the Next-Gen uniform shirt in my closet seem downright normal.

Shadows to the left of me, Vorlons to the right here I am, stuck in the middle with you...
