The Sarah Jane AdventuresNew CBBC spin-off announced.

Russell T Davies has created The Sarah Jane Adventures, a brand new series for CBBC.

Set in present-day West London, the programme stars Elisabeth Sladen, continuing her much-loved role as Sarah Jane Smith.

Yasmin Paige will join her as Sarah's 13-year-old neighbour Maria.

A 60-minute special which will be broadcast in early 2007, with a series following later in the year.

In the special, Sarah and Maria form an unlikely alliance to fight evil alien forces at work in Britain, and against the scheming Ms Wormwood, played by Samantha Bond.

"I left Sarah Jane but she never left me," said Elisabeth. "I can't wait to return to Cardiff (where filming is based) to find out what's going to happen to her next."

"Children's TV has a fine history of fantasy thrillers," added Russell T Davies. "I loved them as a kid, and they were the very first things I ever wrote. So it's brilliant to return to such a vivid and imaginative area of television."

Filming on the special, written by Russell and Gareth Roberts, begins next month. It will be directed by Colin Teague and produced by Susie Liggat. The full series goes into production in spring 2007.

I love Elisabeth Sladen and Sarah Jane, but I wish this was going to be a kids show. I have not heard them but I have heard that the Big Finish audio adventuires for SJS are quite good. From all I have read about them I think a more adult series would be better. Not that I won't watch this one just to our Lis!

K-9 and Company was afailed pilot. No it wasn't good and no it is not available on DVD. It is out there if you look hard enough though.

Though K9 will be seen in the first special he will not be seen in the following six part series. This will feature Sammantha Bond (Ms Moneypenny) as the villianous Ms Wormwood.



With the current popularity of Doctor Who, and these new SJS and K-9 series, I wouldn't be surprised if the Beeb does actually putout K-9 & Company on DVD soon.

Who's Sarah Jane Gets Own Show

Doctor Who executive producer Russell T. Davies told SCI FI Wire that production is underway on the spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, featuring Elisabeth Sladen in her role as the title investigative journalist, Sarah Jane Smith, who is known to Who fans as the companion to the third and fourth Doctors in the 1970s. "It's a one-off special, not a pilot," Davies said in an interview in London. "And that will be followed by a series that starts filming in April. Right now, we have to balance Doctor Who and [spinoff series] Torchwood, but the most important thing we always have to remember is that Doctor Who is the mothership. Without that, we wouldn't exist, so we plan everything very carefully."

The one-hour Sarah Jane special will bring back the character, who was re-introduced in the second season of the current incarnation of Doctor Who in an episode titled "School Reunion" earlier this year on BBC1 in the United Kingdom. Smith was originally introduced in an earlier version of Doctor Who in 1973. "[We're] getting our team ready to make a one-hour Sarah Jane," Davies said. "After that, we'll start working on the scripts, and by next April we'll be ready for the series, so it's all dovetailed nicely."

In the new series, Sladen's Smith will appear with Yasmine Paige, who plays Smith's 13-year-old niece, Maria, and the two team up to battle alien forces they encounter around Britain, including the scheming Ms. Wormwood (played by Samantha Bond), who appears in the one-hour special.

One character that won't be appearing in the series is Smith's loyal robot dog, K-9, who last appeared in "School Reunion" and will also play a role in the special. "Sadly, we don't own the rights to K-9," Davies said. "[Writer] Bob Baker granted us the rights for 'School Reunion,' but he's been planning his own spinoff series for K-9 for the past 10-15 years. That series is in development right now with Jetix, so I hope it happens, and good luck to him."

The character of Sarah Jane Smith has recently appeared in a series of licensed audio adventures by Big Finish. But Davies said that he doesn't consider those appearances part of the Doctor Who canon. "Nothing we say in The Sarah Jane Adventures will contradict anything that ever happened in the Big Finish stories, but neither will we refer to them, because we're very different," Davies said. "Much as I love the Big Finish adventures, it's a very small and very specific audience, and if we tried to pick up from that, no one would have any idea what we're on about. Plus, those Sarah Jane stories were very much for adults, and this is a children's series, and it won't be shown in the Doctor Who timeslot either; it will be shown earlier. So it's a brand-new start. It's written as though if you never heard of Sarah Jane and don't know what's going on."

Doctor Who begins its third season in the United Kingdom on BBC1 early next year. The second season of Doctor Who begins airing in the United States on SCI FI Channel on Sept. 29 and will air Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The "School Reunion" episode will air on SCI FI on Oct. 11. —Joe Nazzaro

I was lucky enough, if that is what you call it, to find K-9 & Company on a torrent site and someone had actually made a nice little DVD presentation of it. I love SJS, but this show is just weak. I have seen far worse, but....

I just hope that with two spin-off series the creative energies on Doctor Who won't get diluted. Remember when Joss Whedon was working on Buffy, Angel, and Firefly? RTD better not spread himself too thin over too many projects or they'll all suffer, imo.

I was a little surprised by the SJS Adventures pilot, given that it was billed as a show "for kids" I guess I was expecting it to be more "dumbed down" and have more stuff in it along the lines of the garbage cans that ate people in Doctor Who. I kept thinking "This is a kids show?"

But it certainly has potential - well, at least as much as the Jon Pertwee era did with the Doctor being stuck on Earth during a period of repeated alien invasions. "Torchwood" and "Doctor Who" have already established that the threat level from aliens and other wierdness is high (for the UK at least). I just wonder, is the Torchwood Institue AWARE of Sarah Jane Smith and her attic full of alien goodies? I'd have to think not or they'd take it all away from her, right?

I'm also glad K-9 appears to be all but written out of the story. Okay, yes, I admit I he can be cute AT FIRST, but he gets annoying really fast.

Good point about Torchwood. I wish we could crossover the two, but with SJSA being "kids" fare and TW being so adult, I can't see anything but problems with that idea. Kids would be screaming to watch Torchwood and the parents would be cringing at the idea. Too bad because it could be excellent.

I'm hoping for even just a mention of her as a "person of interest" (or whatever) in an episode of Torchwood, or in SJS Adventures she mentions the Torchwood Institute, it would be a nice nod to the other series and make it a bit more convincing that both not only exist in the same Whoniverse, but are happening concurrently, but wouldn't necessitate any CAST crossing over.

Torchwood without Captain Jack showing up? Sacrilege! I keep waiting for an ep of TW where they bring in the Brigadier as an "advisor" to Torchwood on the Doctor. Nice nod to the classic series when the Doctor was a "scientific advisor" to U.N.I.T.
