tpb vs individual comics

I feel so torn! I love my comic collections, and have spent quite a bit of money on my comics, and now I find myself addicted to trades. They're easier to read, they fit on my shelf better, and take up less space in the long run. It makes me hesitant to purchase mini-series because I *know* it will be released in a trade, and yet for the longer series I don't want to purchase them until I know the entire series will come out in trade paperbacks.

Anyone else have this dilemma? I'm much more into reading than collecting, though I must have my line-art Buffy covers.

I'm kind of used to old-fashioned comic books myself, I don't buy TPB unless I really have to, like "Marvel Zombies" which I missed out on. I grew up in the '70s collecting comic books so there's just something about holding a No. 1 mint copy today that feels right instead of holding a big book with six or eight issues printed on them. I guess it's the collector in me.

I agree with Rayman's feeling about holding the comic in your hand. However, with the prices of individual issues these days, I really can't afford to buy them. Now I go with the TPBs, which often come out cheaper than the individual issues. or find CBR files online. For instance, i really wanted to read the Marvel Civil War series this summer, but with so many comics tied in and they all cost at least 3.00, there is just no way to buy them all. CBR files let me read the story. Then, afterwards, I can go always go and buy the issues that intrigued me the most.

Comic-book prices are ridiculous nowadays, that's one of the reasons why I stopped buying two years ago. But I wanted to read the Civil War series this year, plus the return of Moon Knight, Blade, Ghost Rider, and the limited series Hellstorm: Son of Satan. These were my favorite characters in the '70s and '90s. I order online because of the discounts so that makes it easier for my wallet.

Hellstorm # 1 is coming out sometime in October, only a six issue limited series.

Wow. I by trades for stuff that I don't want the single issues. Other stuff is single issues followed by trades in some cases *lol*

Trades I get are:
Superman/Batman
Strangers in Paradise
Exiles

I do this mainly so I have all the issues. I have a "subscription" at a comic book store, they give a pretty good discount and are good about keeping my list up. I currently have 30+ titles on that list and know how much of an addiction it is

Ah, the prices we pay for our addictions, eh? My main addiction is movies. With 500 plus dvds, I have definitely put out some bucks over the last few years.

I finally read TPB "Marvel Zombies" which was hilarious. Didn't much care for the art but the story just made me laugh out loud. I say pick that up if you haven't read it.

Along the same lines, I was just reading about a trade paperback called "Recess Pieces". It is a zombie story set in an elementary school where the kids have to fight the zombies. It is from Dark Horse. It sounds alternately gruesome, disturbing, and hilarious. I may have to pick that one up. I just can't pass up a good zombie story.

Rayman, with the popularity of zombies and the supernatural heros at Marvel, I am thinking we need to bring back Werewolf By Night, Tomb of Dracula and Brother Voodoo. Whatcha think?

I think Werewolf By Night need to come back, if you remember "Marvel Comics Presents" series in the '90s they had a very cool updated Werewolf story. I still have at least 20 old '70s issues (first appearance of Moon Knight is in there) in my closet.

Moon Knight, both the original series and Fist of Khonshu rocked! I haven't seen any of the more recent incarnations, but I always loved that character.
