...so I'm very much not a proper Comics Geek, because I've only read a handful of titles in graphic novel format, and my comic book purchasing is pretty erratic. But I'd be interested to know what people consider the best comic titles out there, and why.
To get the ball rolling: I adore Gaiman's Sandman. The spinoff titles have been largely disappointing, though - not many people can write Gaiman's 'verse convincingly, imho. But Mike Carey rocks the house - I love love love his Lucifer books, and The Furies is also fantastic.
I also think that Hellblazer is splendid - just love the Britishness of it all. (I quite liked the movie too, to my surprise - not the John Constantine of the comics, but a very enjoyable incarnation, I thought. And Tilda Swinton's depiction of the angel was luscious. And there were [strike]sexy[/strike] pervy demons. Er. I'm losing credibility here, aren't I?)
I've read a little Alan Moore - V for Vendetta, WATCHMEN, The Swamp Thing. Oh, and Gaiman's most excellent original Books of Magic, and a disappointing sequel. And The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which was so much better than the movie...) But other than that, not so much.
So - what's your poison? DC or Marvel? Or neither? |

I'm more of a superhero fanatic. I collected Spiderman(all titles), Daredevil, X-Men, New Mutants, Ironman, X-Factor, Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, The Punisher, Moon Knight. I think the best stories were in the 1980s, Frank Miller single-handedly made Daredevil very popular. My favorites were the limited series like Secret Wars I and II, plus the crossovers to other comics. There was only one Vertigo title I was hooked on and that was Preacher.
I wouldn't call these the worst comic books, but they were all hype back in the late '80s. The day top Marvel artist made their own comic company called "Image". Spawn, Cable, Wildcats, Nighthawk are some of the titles. Sure the art was great as usual but the stories and writing were less than stellar. |

Okay first of all I just want to say fayjprufrock that Mike Carey fella really annoys me he writes stuff all about me but do I get any royalties ...NO not on your nelly
I'm a big Marvel fan too, me and the brother used to collect them when we were younger I loved Spiderman, X Men, The Avengers, The Punisher basically those mentioned by Rayman and more I also loved Secret Wars particularly the first one .....its amazing how loads of younger spidey fans don't realise thats where the black costume/Venom Carnage all came about..
I used to hate 2000AD it had Judge Dredd in it |

Yeah its completely sick and twisted and I freaking love it! And no im not a goth.. hmm well I do have more than a few goth qualities but overall no, not into witchcraft and im not a satanist... I just appreciacte the more odd things in life. That and if you work in retail dealing with obnoxious and idiot customers all day then you are more than likely going to understand where the comic is coming from |

Thanks for getting back to me Invisiblesteph being honest I was starting to think no one around here likes anything different or odd ...seems all a bit too p.c. which brings me to the question whats a pretty Australian lady with a passion for the perculiar doing on a site like this? I honestly was seriously considering not coming back but you have grasped my interest and I have been pulled back from the Abyss. So your not a Goth, a witch or a .......Satanist ...yet (Give it time .....the love for me will not come over night ) The truth is neither am I,..... I suppose I'm just like yourself someone who likes the stranger things. My sympathies with your job I work in the Architectural field and some customers there too can be a pain in the backside. So tell me do you actually play computer games or did you just randomly put that on your profile lol I ask because I have never seen a girl with so many colours in her eyes (green , blue , gray , black) I'm just after getting Command and Conquer: Generals and its doing my head already lol
Do you like Star Trek?........ what other programmes do you like? I like Star Trek myself but try to stay away from the label of Trekkie...uurrgghh I hate that name lol I particularly liked DS9 and TNG. I'm also a sci-fi and generally a film nut.
Okay I probably have talked to much and have bored you to tears along with completely going off topic ......... where were we? Oh Yes comics |

I buy a lot of comics each month (it's part of my entertainment budget) Anyway, all time favorites include:
Lucifer
Batman
Robin
Superman/Batman
Green Arrow
Outsiders
Lady Death
Elfquest
Lenore
Squee
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac
Sandman
Emily: The Strange
The Devil's Panties (also an online comic, and is NOT satanic ----)
I acutally by around 30 titles a month, but those are the ones I will not give up.
New title being released this month: Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter in Guilty Pleasures by Dabel Brothers Productions ((removed)). I read the series so am very interested in the graphic interpretation.
Dable Brothers are doing a lot of graphic interpretations of Science Fiction and Fantasy novels & short stories.
Anyway, I am a DC Girl I do read some Marvel, but only a couple of titles. The whole [/i]House of M[/i] saga just set me off Marvel for a bit.
Thank you for your time,
ShadowNymph |

In the 70's, I started Teen Titans then picked up Batman then Green Arrow then Hawkman then there was the cartoon on ABC on Saturdays and so on and so forth...
I did not pic up a Marvel comic until the early 80's at the public library and I guess I was just too hooked on DC by then. This is also around the time when I really started reading ScienceFiction/Fantasy novels. The library carried Elf Quest and I became addicted to that comic.
So, it's not that I don't like Marvel, it is lack of exposure I do like The New X-Men, it is one of the titles I started when I was younger. And I was really enjoying Excaliber and Astonishing X-Men until the whole House of M story arc (it was intersting and I am adjusting to where the stories are now, but at first I didn't understand "WHY"). I am interested in Exiles but am trying to finish of some other collections before I start getting the trades.
Anyway. That was a long way to say, I haven't read that much Marvel so I don't think about it too much. I tend to stick with DC because I am more familiar with the universe |
