Ah yes, a scifi film about vampires. A westernized live action futuristic vampire movie with a hot chick kicking --- like it's going out of style.

Two word review. It sucked.

Oh, you want more? Ok.

Kurt Wimmer once made a film called Equilibrium. Starring Christian Bale, it was about a police officer in a future society that forbid emotion. Bale's character enforced this policy of the State, until he found out that his partner was a criminal, an emotional deviant. And then, he breaks the rules of his society and finds out a whole different world. See? Character developement. Plot. Yes, there were scenes of the hero mowing down ranks of bad guys. But you did get a sense he was doing dangerous work, plus the Gun Kata gimmick helped sell it.

But we were talking about Ultraviolet. Well, we get Milla Jovovich, whose been in a ton of action driven scifi flicks, including the original and enjoyable The 5th Element. Those who read my reviews regularly know I'm not into action movies as a rule. Like S-- scenes, I need a reason to care. I need to be emotionally invested into what's going on. I need a sense of stakes.

Well, as much as I can tell. You have a plague that has hit, creating a sub race of humans that have fangs, though I'm not sure why. Some humans want to wipe them out. Not sure why, either. Daxus is the big bad guy carrying on experiments to wipe them out, supposedly. Why? Not sure. Gives Violet a chance to knock down scores of bad guys without even parting her lovely Bettie Page-esque bangs?

It would seem so.

Oh, and some kid figures into this. When Violet isn't killing all these bad guys, she's hanging with this kid, alternately threatening him and angsting.

Neat visuals. Lots of over the top, way over the top action. Lame scifi vampire element. Not enough skin.

It sucked.

I still can't believe that this was directed and written by Wimmer because Equilibrium is one of my favorite movies that I can never get tired of watching. Since then I've heard he wasn't happy with the film and that the studio edited the theatrical version. The unrated DVD comes out soon with added scenes, but I don't know if it will help this film one bit. I was totally disappointed walking out of the theater, the movie is terrible.

Yeah, I've heard that Eq was one of those films frelled up by studio meddling. Too bad, that. But, glad to see Wimmer didn't just blow his entire storytelling wad with Equilibrium. Like you, I love that movie and hope we have more movie goodness coming from him.

This just wasn't it.

So, I'm guessing they never explain why her clothes change colors in the movie either? =/

Not only did they not explain the clothes change ( i just assumed tech caught up with a woman's sence of style) The premise changed from the trailers. The Trailers said the Vamps were purposefully bioengineered for war. But the prologue states it was a lab accident. sorry to the Ultraviolet fans, but the movie did not endure the story to new comers.

I just watched this movie on Thursday... I agree that I can't believe Wimmer directed it. The fight scence were a bit too surreal and there were so many gaps in the plot, I'm not quite sure what the point of the movie was.

Anyway, imho, it could have been a lot better.

meh..haven't seen it..not sure if I want to to be honest. I really liked the Mini-series that SFC did in the late 90's tho. Really bugs me..if I recall, there was to be more or it was to be made into a show.
