Depp Not in Legend?
Plus, two hot actresses are linked with the film.
by Paul Davidson

September 19, 2006 - It was never official, but Johnny Depp's widely rumored association with the upcoming vampire flick I Am Legend is apparently not true. Depp won't be fighting the undead bloodsuckers alongside Will Smith, nor will he play one of the vampires themselves, reports IESB.net.

In fact, the part that Depp was rumored to play — Phillip, friend of Smith's character Neville — may not be written into the movie. The new Legend will reportedly be closer to the 1971 adaptation called The Omega Man than the original 1954 novel.

In related news, Blackfilm.com reports that "Salli Richardson has been cast as Ginny, the wife of Will Smith's character, and that Alice Braga (niece of legendary Brazilian actress Sonia Braga) has been cast as Anna."

I Am Legend is slated to begin filming in New York this weekend. Francis Lawrence is directing for Warner Bros. from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman.

Talk about films that shouldn't be remade. OK, it was bad enough when they announced Will Smith was gonna star. I can see him now, "Oh no, you didn't try to bite me!" Now they say it is gonna be closer to Omega Man than the original novel. Now I know it is gonna suck. First "I Robot", then "Wicker Man", now "I Am Legend". I guess I will just have to stick with "The Last Man On Earth". It may not be a perfect adaptation, but it is probably the closest we will get. Plus, you just can't go wrong with Vincent Price!

Over a year since this forum thread was started, the film hits theaters next week.
They should have called it "I am yet another do-over"---they could not even be bothered to think up a new name for the charaqcter before they took it from Charlton Heston and gave it to Will Smith!
WHERE DOES IT END?
Hollyweird is so totally bereft of good ideas that they persist in turning great movies into crap, but they're not so much to blame as the theater-going public. The studios are just doing what they think will make them money---rent The Omega Man, people!

My sci-fi's made fresh from scratch with all natural ingredients, just like Mum used to make; no outlines, no staff of inbred house writers to do it for me.
I'm too old and ugly to send on a book tour, so my work has no value in this world...your loss.

Considering that "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price is the first film based on the book, you can say Omega Man is the remake. I'm actually looking forward to I Am Legend, of all the different trailers I've seen it looks like the writer/director are taking this film seriously. Of course there's going to be some CGI mutants with plenty of action and special effects, but I think Will Smith's performance is what carries this film. And on a side note there have been been some pretty good remakes in the past like, John Carpenter's The Thing, David Cronenberg's The Fly, The Blob ('90s version), even Dawn of the Dead 2004 wasn't bad. Like I always say on these forums, I'm not judging the movie before I see it.

I saw this last night and despite a Hollywood happy ending the movie is a definite must see. Setting it in New York is more eerie then Los Angeles, very good cinematography. As I predicted Will Smith performance is outstanding, I would say Oscar worthy. The biggest turnoff is the CGI vampires which isn't very good, it looks like something out of The Mummy movies. In the end I rate I Am Legend higher than The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man.

Hi all, I went to see I am Legend yesterday afternoon. I like to get in on the mattee price. I have not read the story but have seen the two other films. there are simularites between this verson and the Omega man. he was a army scieneticts seaching for a cure and carred a automatic wepon with him every where he went. the verson with Vencent Price made him out to be a civlian. but I have only seen the films and never read the story.

well the movie is deffely worth seeing. Smith is good in this and the movie is differnt from what hollowood have been giving us these days.
I had heard that the movie grossed more in ticket sales that what the studio expected. so that should say a lot there. there was less action in this movie than you would expect, you did not see the creatures untill latter in the movie and toward the end. I thoght the sean where he ran over some of the creatures was good. the effects looked like a video game.
