Dungeons and Dragons and other RPGs.

I am just starting to get back into D&D after a couple of decades absence. I remember back in the early 80's there were a seeming plethora of RPG games like D&D. There were games like Gamma World, Traveler, Heroes, Champions, GURPS, and the list could go on. In the 90's, I briefly got into LARP with Vampire:The Masquerade. Now, I feel out of touch and completely ignorant of what is out there on the table-top, pen and paper RPG front. Can anyone recommend some games that I might be interested in?

Pat, AD&D is still being sold though I'm not a player of it anymore. After the third edition came out I stopped because it was just the same stuff basicly but reworked rules for the 20d system. Not only that, but it wasn't flexible enough for me.

I started playing GURPS though and found it was the best system to have. Easy to play, flexible and covered every source of adventure subject you could think of. It's still in production as well.

I think Gamma World is trying to make a comeback again but I've not even bothered looking at it this time around because I can use the GURPS system to do the same thing.

You know, for me, the hardest thing is finding people to play. As a mid-aged RPG player (Does that sound sad?) the people I've played games with in the past have families and jobs that keep them to busy to play anymore. I'd let my son and his friends play but, hell, they are so stuck on video games and (shutter) Yugio cards I don't think they can even think freely or act out a character.

I have a four shelf system of source books, adventures, and such that I've collected over time and a world time line just crying to be played in. Sigh... My world sleeps the sleep of the dead and only dream when I do.

oh sure they start this post after I mention the Serenity RPG in the firefly page.
Tried D&D back in the 80's too. as well as Trek. didn't like it. The problem was my game master was a megalomaniac. They had a weapon they called TFP (turbo flush phaser) a beam to over flow all the toilets in the enemies ship and short circuit primary circuits. and only the could use it forgot why.

Oh, I know D&D is still out there, Scryer. I just ordered a new Player's Kit they came out with. MY sourcebooks are about 20 years out of date! I had quit playing when D&D became too complicated when I was in my 20's. When I started playing, it took about 30 minues to create a character on a piece of notebook paper. Now...well, let's just say I wasn't as patieint in my 20's as I am now. I am really interested in finding some new games. I have some folks here in my area to play with now, so it is a new social event for me. I would be interested in finding some updated GURPS, though, as it has been a long time since I used that system.

All I had to do was ask for a forum for RPG, card games, and board games and, *BOOM*, I had three instead of the one I asked for! Gotta love these folks who run Trekpassions. They listen to their users and respond dang fast!

I never played the Trek RPG, or the Doctor Who. I would like to try them though, sometime. As for Serenity, I was not familiar with the fact there WAS a game until you mentioned it.

I have had people tell me about these before. I really haven't gotten into online gaming of any kind. To me, it just somehow takes the immediacy and fun out of RPG if you aren't sitting around a table with a bunch of friends. But, that is just me. I know a few people who love online gaming.

shadowrun has always and will probably always be my fave. About the only two I ever play anymore are DnD and Shadowrun, but anything you're into...there's a game for it. lol Just do a search with rpg and you'll likely find something.

I had completely forgotten about Shadowrun. I didn't even know it was still around. That was one I always wanted to play, especially since I am a huge horror fan. Thanks for reminding me. And welcome to the forums!

hrm...I never really thought of shadowrun as horror. I guess it goes that way easily though. Games are very simple and kind of bland for me anymore though. There just aren't enough gamers around here to build a group that behaves appropriately around kids...even the ones WITH kids don't most of the time. While it's heart-warming to see my 5yr old sitting on her bed with a sourcebook, rolling characters for fun...It's a little disturbing that my gaming group's ages don't even add up to how old I was when I started playing. I was in an IRC game for a long time but our GM has had to put it on "hold" and its a long hold.

The problem I am running into is exactly the opposite. My friends who would like to play are all responsible adults with jobs. Finding a time where we can all get together and play on a regular basis has become a bit of a cow. I am shooting for trying to start my campaign after holidays when everybody's life slows down. I have the prolgue for the campaign, the story for the first adventure and all of the first adventure is completed. Now it is just finding the time to actually play.

I've never played an RPG...this is my sobbing confession.
Everyone says I would be good at LARPS because I'm an actress and theatre person and all that jazz...but I think my attention span is a little too short. Oh well.

LARP is a hell of a lot of fun. Vampire is my favorite. We used to play in New Orleans at a little bar near the university and we had a blast. I think it would definitely be a thing for you. Just think of it as improv.

Patrick, me and you should get together and make like a Dirty South RPG weekend somewhere between South Carolina and Texas and show me the ways of the RPG...I will bring you margaritas and fried chicken and I just learned how to make cheesecake..what say you?
