Doctor Who has some great episodes for Halloween viewing. Off the top of my head, "Horror of Fang Rock", "The Talons of Weng Chiang", "The Brain of Morbius", "The Hand of Fear", "Daemons", "State of Decay", The Curse of Fenric"..... man, there are a ton! Anyone else got any favorites I didn't mention?

I didn't want to mention that for folks who haven't seen it yet, but it would be a GREAT Halloween episode. Too bad DW doesn't air on the BBC during the fall as it would be great to see what they would do for a Halloween episode every year. Ummmm..do they celebrate Halloween in the UK?

The new season of DW is airing in the States now so I can't wait to see what epsiode is on the week of Halloween. I just hope that it isn't something that Joss Whedon might do for a Halloween episode, those eps. of 'Buffy' and 'Angel' were strange enough.

Guy Fawkes Day is a political holiday and Halloween is a religious one. Guy Fawkes Day celebrates the discovery and defeating of a plot to destroy Parliament. Halloween, a.k.a All Hallow's Eve is a pagan holiday absorbed into the Catholic Church calendar (MOST Catholic holidays ARE old pagan holidays) and is suppoed to be, and I hate to use the tired old cliche', the night when the veil between the world's is thinnest and the dead can walk and communicate with the living. Originally known as Samhain by the Celts, most of the things we do now here in the U.S. are adapted from traditions established to keep the dead from bringing misery to the living. Things like wearing costumes to disguise themselves or scare away the dead, jack o' lanterns for scaring them away as well, and treats for appeasing the dead.

Is Halloween particularly celebrated over here? Well, the shops have a lot more stuff to tie in with it that there used to be when i was a nipper but I can't say that Trick N' Treat and parties are particularly widespread in my neck of the woods.



That's too bad. Halloween is my favorite holiday. It is the one day of the year when you can be anyone you want to be and not get arrested for impersonation! Is that novel still available in print? I am just started to find myself interested in the Doctor Who original novels and am looking for some good ones.

Sounds cool Jamie. So far the only DW novels I have read ARE the ebooks on the BBC site. Have you read any of the nineth Doctor books?

We do have a tradition, though perhaps not so much in the here and now, of Ghost Stories at Christmas over here. Local Newspapers often run competitions in this genre. The BBC used to have quite an annual event of a big ghost story at Christmas. They did a very well remembered adaption of The Signalman, The Stone Tape by Nigel Kneale was commissioned for this slot. In recent years they had Christopher Lee doing some MR James stories.



Now that is very cool. I think I have probably read some of those stories in a book I had of Christmas ghost stories. In fact, the title you mentioned by Kneale sounds very familair. I am gonna have to see if I still have that book as I can't remember the title.
