James Marsters!!!!!
Okay, not really. But if he's not going to be Spike again, we
have to find some way to get him to do his fake British accent.
Plus, if we really want to go the route of having drool-worthy Doctors....
But actually, Anthony Stewart Head wouldn't be bad.
Why did Ron Moody turn down the gig? He would have been
amazing.

What about Richard Coyle (Jeff on "Coupling")?
He always seemed to have the ability to convey knowing
exactly what's going on and not having a clue what's going on
at the same time which would come in handy in the role.
Plus, excellent comedic sense.

Since you mention "As Time Goes By," what about
Dame Judi Dench? I think she'd be a FABULOUS Doctor.
Unless, of course, you consider the gender switching blasphemy....

And, of course, if you met a different incarnation of yourself,
you could also get yourself pregnant. Then again, that's
right out of a Heinlein short story.
Another person that I think would make an outstanding Doctor
would be Hugh Laurie. He's already got the M.D. part down,
after all. But, he is absolutely not allowed to stop being House.
But since this is hypothetical, he'd be quite entertaining as the
Doctor. He could even have his British accent back.

You know, I've never been comfortable with certain types of
time loops, but in the story "All you zombies" by Heinlein, there
is the rather interesting paradox I mentioned, which I am about to spoil,
so do not read further if you do not want it spoiled....
Essentially, the protagonist begins life as female, and through a
series of events becomes pregnant, gives birth to a girl, then
ends up changing genders, getting access to time travel when HE
than travels back and meets his earlier female self, seduces her
(who can resist wooing themselves?), impregnates her, etc...and
it turns out by the end that many of the characters in the story are
the same protagonist. The child of the protagonist ends up being
the protagonist, the bartender who gave the protagonist time
travel access is the protagonist, etc. So by the end, the loop is
entirely self contained -- the protagonist just "popped" into
existence -- entirely caused itself.
Perplexing, troubling, but interesting.

How about John Hannah?
He could be quite amusing in the role.
Should we make a companions thread, too? Who we'd like
to see as companions, or companions that should have been, etc.?

My vote for a Doctor would be Alexis Denisof from Buffy and Angel. He definitely has the acting chops to be brilliant in the role and he IS English. As for Anthony Head, I say bring him back as the Master. Yeah, we saw him as another bad guy, but if they find a way to bring the Master back (and I have some ideas on that one) we know that Time Lords can choose their appearance, so he could easily pluck the image from the Doctor's mind of a recent enemy and assume that form.

Yes, he did a fantastic job in "Sea of Souls."
I was thinking more of his performance in "Sliding Doors" than the
Mummy movies when I made the suggestion. He seems quite
able to portray the comedy, but also outstanding at the more
serious and touching moments. Especially as evidenced by his
work in "Four Weddings and a Funeral."

Idunno. I'm a devoted Buffy fan, but I don't really see Alexis
Denisof pulling off the Doctor. He could be a companion, though (like
he was on Angel and Buffy).
If Glenn Quinn hadn't died, sadly, I think he could have made
a good Doctor, though.

I could see it in a few years maybe. Not yet though. The Sun reported today that David Tennant has signed for series four, but that is not officially announced yet.

I loved that episode!
"Well, to be fair, I did have a couple of gadgets which he probably didn't,
like a teaspoon and an open mind." -- the Doctor
"We call it 'the Pit'." ah, and the good quotes go on and on...
Oh. Sorry. There was a question being posed, wasn't there?
It's so easy to get distracted by nostalgia for such good old
episodes....

We could always have Brendan Gleeson as the Doctor and you could get a preview of the regeneration by playing about with the rewind button on your Goblet of Fire dvd.
Regarding Fringey's comment on David Tennant's commitment to a third series, DWO http//www.drwho-online.co.uk reports that their sources indicate that there is an option in place if the fourth series is commissioned by the BBC. As all the indications are that the fourth series will be RTD's last as he has MGM (More Gay Men) planned with Red Productions, could the fourth in fact be the last series?
Oh, I am sure that, if the ratings stay high, the Beeb will find someone to continue the show. Maybe Stephen Moffatt?

I am sure that the Beeb probably knew upfront that RTD would not be with the series for more than a few seasons and have a candidate or two lined up to take his place. With the money DW is generating for them, I just can't see them not continuing with more than just xmas specials. There is a plan....

To follow up on a comment Jamie77 made in the "Romance and
the Doctor" thread it occurred to me to add that, although I have nothing
against them, I would prefer that NONE of the Baldwin brothers
ever play the Doctor.
