"Coventry City last won the FA Cup in what year?"

"No? Well, I'm not surprised you didn't get that. It was
in fact a trick question. Coventry City have never won
the FA Cup".

In the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars", Benny Russel's stories aren't just rejected, the publisher recycles an entire print run to get rid of them. Setting aside the fact that they must've been racist as hell to throw away money like that, the episode struck a chord with me for a different reason. When one of Benny's coworkers suggests he publish them himself, another coworker points out he "might as well write it in chalk on the sidewalk, more people will read it."
A 35 year old, living in his parent's basement can save up his pizza delivery money for an electronic keyboard. Form a garage band, sell home-burned CDs from the back of his Mom's minivan but he's cool, because he's a musician.
Anyone can buy a camcorder, shoot some digital then edit it into a documentary. Take it to the Sundance Film Festival, and give Kevin Smith a run for his money because you are now an "Independent Filmmaker"...but an Independent Publisher?
Oh well that's just a vanity press and no one takes you seriously; might as well write it in chalk on the sidewalk, right?

My last few posts on this topic have led up to the same question; do you believe, or just think you're working a gold mine?
How bad do you want it?
What are you willing to sacrifice?
Will you do whatever it takes?
Will you avail yourself of every resource you have, and everything you can get your hands on?
Will you stick with it when people say you're being foolish, that you're wasting your time and money on what they think is a fool's errand?
Will you just give up when it looks hopeless, or will you fight that much harder?
Will you fight to keep your dream alive no matter what, no matter how long it may take?

Yeah, and the Steelers finally won their fifth Superbowl...jeez I hope they don't expect to win every twenty-five years.
Susan Lucci used to do commercials mocking how she'd been passed over; I hope she doesn't expect an Emmy Award every 19 years---but I believe the Boxton Red Sox fans have them all beat, hands down.
They only waited about 87 years or so for a World Series win.
Now that's patience and persistence.

Straight from the pages of Crap Magazine (I wonder, is that a weekly, monthly or quarterly publication?), yet another unbelievable true tale...

I edited, typeset, proofed, then published three books while I was legally blind.
I've had one cataract surgery, and have no excuses for the rest of them.

"Coleridge was a drug addict. Poe was an alcoholic. Marlowe was killed by a man whom he was treacherously trying to stab. Pope took money to keep a woman's name out of a satire then wrote a piece so that she could still be recognized anyhow. Chatterton killed himself. Byron was accused of incest. Do you still want to be a writer--and if so, why?"
-- Bennett Cerf (co-founder of Random House)

"All writers are vain, selfish and lazy, and at the very bottom of their motives lies a mystery. Writing a book is a long, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand."
-- George Orwell

"Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards."
-- Robert A. Heinlein

You make a good point, Bugger; I'm convinced "normal" people cannot tell a decent story, let alone write it down.
Heinlein I believe was embarrassed by the ease of storytelling, as opposed to real work---something done outdooors, often in inclement weather, with some sort of digging implement (beats steelworking all to hell, I can tell you that for nothing),
Hemingway ate his gun---that should tell you Orwell was right. The poem I posted came together one night, and would not go away until I got it out of my head.
Inspiration---it's been called being kissed by a muse. I jokingly refer to my creative urges as, "Kissed, nothing, I get lap danced by muses," but sometimes I wonder...especially when I type a word I didn't know I knew how to spell. Then there are times when it feels like you're being badgered, nagged, bullied and B-----slapped---a muse dominatrix, now there's a novel thought---yet the muses favor me with their graces, and that's all that matters.

How do you know you're a writer?
When writing's easier than not writing.
That poem came together late one night, like bees in my head. I'd shoo the words away but they swarmed back together, and the only way to be free of them was to bang out the poem in about twenty minutes or so (forty if you count polish and correcting typos).
Sounds like an addiction, doesn't it?
Perhaps it is.

When I first read Stranger in a Strange Land, I had no idea I was reading a censored version.
At a point in his career when editors should have fallen to their knees and thanked whatever god they believe in that Master Heinlein had deigned to grace them with a manuscript, his publishers insisted a masterpiece be cut by some 60,000 words because it was too controversial.

Nuff said.

Kira, I'm curious.

Are you trying to pick a fight?

I can't tell, so I figured I'd ask.
