Michael Vick, the star quarterback of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, has pleaded guilty to charges of organizing dogfights---and not the kind that involves combat aircraft.
I am an admitted omnivore, but I will not stand for deliberate, senseless cruelty toward non-sentient lifeforms of any kind.
I don't watch UFC or pro wrestling, but those guys know what they are getting into, and there are doctors and referees to make the sports as safe as possible, so that's fine with me.

During halftime on NBC's most recent Sunday Night Football broadcast---GO STEELERS!---I was shocked to witness msnbc news anchor Keith Olberman defend Michael Vick's crimes.
Dogs are abused, starved and tortured until they are mean and hungry enough to rip another dog's throat out, but that's no big deal to Olberman?
These crimes are not merely perverse, they are pure evil; and yet Olberman believes Vick should at some point in the near future be granted forgiveness?
Cruel, sadistic animal torture is abhorrent, unconscionable, and unforgivable. What kind of soulless bastard is Olberman, to say on national television that it's really no big deal, and that Vick has been punished enough---and if Imus lost his job for making a stupid remark about hairdos, why does Olberman still have a job in broadcasting?

Am not sure what the laws are over there but in the uk dog fights for cash or " enjoyment???" have been outlawed for many years. I hope that the moron involved has been pilloried in the press and publicly humiliated by all.

According to his accomplices, Vick personally drowned several of the surviving 2nd place contestants.
Vick could get as much as 5 years in prison. His plea deal stipulates 18 months, but unfortunately there are special rules for special people.

Paris Hilton---the richest amateur ---- skank in America---was arrested for probation violation; she repeated her crime of reckless driving while intoxicated. She was sentenced to 45 days in jail, which was immediately cut to 23 days "for good behavior". Although she was released after a day, the judge ordered her back to do a total of 19 days in jail.

Nicole Richie---daughter of the singer Lionel Richie---was arrested for reckless driving driving while intoxicated. She was sencenced to one whole day in jail, but did all of 82 minutes (jeez, I wish I was making this up).

Bad enough the Los Angeles penal system needs a dose of Viagra. I'm hoping the judge in Vick's case does not believe his ability to throw a ball to be a mitigating factor---and what's Keith Olberman's malfunction?
Damn right I'm taking this personally; what I want to know is where's the uproar?
Why am I the only one calling for harsh punishment of Vick and at least an explanation from Olberman?

Hate to say this but " justice " has very little to do with the lagal system anymore, my friend.
This side of the pond there is a total tool called pete dougherty, or something like that, has been caught with the big H in his pocket and his g/f kate moss, some skanky, skinny model???
This little to@@er has escaped going to jail about eight times cause he is a z list celeb and is just makin the legal system look even stuipider than normal.
If it was me the first court time would have been time in the big house in a cell with BUBBA, "hello little boy, your my B---- now."
The whole legal system makes me want to puke blood with fury, and most of the people i know feel the same way so i have some idea just how angry you are mate.

Sorry to hear the problem isn't limited to the laughing stock that is the Lost Angeles penal system, Twincarb, but at least you're as honked off as I am.

I expect better of this site's membership. The mundanes mill about like sheep, herding together and bleating about a problem but WE are the people who stand up when push comes to shove...or so I thought.
Hey, even if it's just a "bump", I'd like the rank and file to sound off, to show the reast of the world we believe what we're claiming to be all about, and we're ready to back it up in word and deed.

It all just bugs me. The things that anoy me about the Justice system.

1. When one tries to defend them self your either a fool or guilty.

2. You need a degree to read the laws.

3. If you're rich you get off scotfree the fourth or fifth time through when the "lessor classes" get the max on the first time through.

4. legalese give me a headache.

5. somewhere in the last 200 years we started living at the behest of the government and when it should be the other way around.

6. Having rights doesn't mean anything anymore.

The only way I see to fix these problems and more is to revolt because it seems that it's imposable to vote in the people that would give a damn.

THe way Celebs get the message is through their wallet.
you will see verry few Vick jerseys out there and you won't see him as a spoke person any time soon.
I'm glad they haLted the reliease pf Oj's if i did it book.

Actors at least can adjust the roles they do.

One of the nightly features on Countdown with Keith Olberman is his nomination for "Worst Person in the World" (cue tocca in D-minor by Bach).
Last night, during halftime on the Saints-Colts game, Keith Olberman nominated himself. I can only surmise someone pulled him aside and showed him his script from Aug 26, then explained what they do to those poor animals; his explanation and mea culpa were acceptable to me.

I feel it important to draw attention to a story that made the local sports news yesterday evening.
Ben Roethlisberger, ace quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will donate $1,000 to the local police K-9 unit in every city where the Steelers play this season.
When Roethlisberger heard that his hometown K-9 had been shot in the line of duty, he decided to make funds available to purchase body armor for the police dogs, starting with the season opener against Cleveland.
Now that's more like it.

It's incredibly sad, I agree.
And it is terrible that it's a common thing around here in the south.

But on the flip side, it irks me that the publicity about this is SO sensational, but what about when people are murdered and tortured? Just another sad story on the news, right? It's terrible that we get all in a huff about dogs being tortured (and it grinds my gears, don't get me wrong) but we've become desensitized to human murder.

I wouldn't say it's unforgivable. It's easy for power and stardom to make one feel "above the law", I would imagine, but I bet Michael Vick is not in a happy place right now.
Sometimes a harsh terrible mistake is a needed wakeup call.

At least this person, MAY have seen the error of his ways and is making some sort of amends.
We the people with at least two brain cells( am i being generous to myself here???)must begin to make a stand on the things that affect all of us, yes even the mundanes.
Now i am not sure where to start, the uk is in a mess with the big brother state nearer a reality than most suspect, cctc cameras scattered all around, the legal system is falling apart due to the intarference of the do-gooders that give more" rights " to the criminal than the victims, the moral delcine and just plain rudeness of scociety in general and all the other things that make life just plain annoying.

I feel that's what this thread is for; something else I learned from sci-fi, this time from
Babylon 5.
When people persist in doing a foolish thing, it is even more important to make certain the truth is out where all can see it.
Casey, I might make you a bit nervous with this but I don't place a very high value on human life. Humans are frequently stupid, selfish, and tend to get themselves killed in obvious ways---this world needs more Darwin Award winners.

I don't point at any one group or nation, I fault humans in general but there is more. Kirsten Storms was recently arrested for D.U.I. in L.A.---yup, yet another pretty blonde actress. Wonder what she will get for the same crime as Paris and Nicole...sigh.

However the big news is out of Las Vegas.
O.J. Simpson was just arrested on charges of armed robbery.
His defense is "I'm O.J. Simpson, how could I possibly expect to get away with robbery?"
That could be an effective arguement, assuming he knows he has used the only "get out of jail free" card in his deck.

Question will this man be put in a home for the criminally STUPID or what!!! How many chances dose he want to give the police??
He must be at the shallow end of the gene pool, because stupidity seems to be his strong suit.
Hate to say that i do not read a daily paper or even hardly ever watch the news because it just makes my blood pressure go too damm high, with all the problems on this troubled planet, that man is more newsworthy than a plane crash that killed 40+ people??? and just to make matters worse i have a stinking cold, still never mind.

I have to agree with Ninjabear on this. Most people aren't into independent thinking. I worked as a security guard for almost 12 years and I got the chance to meet a lot of people. I put everyone in groups, the 5% independent thinkers and 95% sheeple, herd animal, and total lemming. I know it sounds bad but in the thousands of people I've meet and had to deal with the percentage points I've listed are true. Most people don't like to think, or they like to let others think for them. If they can they will run in a crowd and let group mind rule them, which usually turns out bad. In most people independent thinking, asking questions, questioning rules, or even making your own decisions on food is rare. One of the problems with the group mind is the complete lack of caring. Sorry to ramble on but it's what I believe.

As for OJ, I think stupid is an understatement.

The biggest problem with trying to think for yourself is the media and the powers that control them ( make of that what you will, friends) The constant bombardment of, buy this and wear that and drive this so on..
I believe that most mundanes are too afaraid to put their own ideas into the public domain but i don't give a hoot anymore.
Put the smartest people to work on global warming or any other issue and all that will come of it is a 10,000 page report that won't do a thing.
I wish i had a simple plan to sort out the planet and all of us on it but i don't, all answere on the back of large donation cheques made payable to....??

One of the primary reasons Barnes & Noble Booksellers gave for denying store shelf space to my book series was "name recognition and author credentials"---such as A Million Little Pieces of fiction, by the liar James Frey...but it's worse.

If I did it by O. J. Simpson is available at your local Barnes & Noble, while I'm relegated to the online service only.
I must say I love that title.
