|

Living in Ireland where you don't really see many firearms about and only very few households carry a gun I find it amazing that you have a place like the States were they are so easily available. With the recent tragedies of the moment in the Hamish school and the other school shootings the other week (and a few years back Columbine) it really rings out to me that America has serious problems with freely available guns and gun laws. The big question is should they be banned completely? What good do they really serve apart from law enforcement perhaps? Is it possible to implement a complete ban?
I personally think they should be banned completely or at least with much stricter guidelines all across the states or more of these desperate events will take place!!
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

"if you make it a crime to have a gun, then only Criminals will have guns" (standard reply to banning guns)
"you can have my gun WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM COLD DEAD HANDS" (charlton Heston)
Ok Brits, lets have a Yank chime in. The faith US citezins have in our government is almost gone after Katrina and I'd say gone from th minoraty groups. We love to point out the second Ammendment to the Constition The Right to Bare arms.
some in The mid west see the ownership of a gun as a birth right.
If the Boys at Columbine Didn't have Guns Theyed have used knifes and fire bombs. the man in the Amish school would have used a machette. the lack of guns doesn't meanl the end of violence
BUT, WHO NEEDS A AK-47 TO HUNT RABBITS
we have to be of a certain age to drive and have to pass a test, why not the same for a gun?
BTW no i don't own a gun
Will someone shut that man up
NEVER! |

One of my favorite jokes is the one about the immigrant studying for his citizenship test, who concluded the 2nd Ammendment is more important than the 1st Ammendment to the U. S. Constitution. When asked why, he responds, "Because if you have a gun, you can say anything you want."
We don't need more Draconian legislation, we need better enforcement of the laws on the books; but sometimes there will be tragedy. I don't advocate banning vegetables because of e-coli, or airliners because of terrorists; anything can be a weapon and any weapon can be misused.
Banning weapons is tantamount to saying your government doesn't trust you.
Personally, in all my 44 years on this planet I've never taken a human life with a firearm but I am, and have been an expert marksman since I was 11 years old.

Late one night, an intruder pounds on the door of a suburban home. Fearing for the safety of her children the young mother gets her husband's pistol, creeps downstairs, levels the weapon and tells the intruder to back off, or she will shoot through the door.
The police arrive to find the housewife in her kitchen with the "intruder", a service station attendant who had been robbed, ped, then released in the neighborhood. The guy ran to the only house with a light on, seeking help.
When her husband returns from work, his wife explains why his gun is laying on the nightstand; she doesn't know scam the bullets out.
The husband pushes the cyllinder out of the revolver's frame, and explains he would never keep a loaded weapon in a house with children. Ammunition is kept in a lockbox under their bed.
At this point the husband assures his wife he will teach her to use the weapon safely...and he did.
My father was a certified NRA Safety Instructor; my mother is still a crack shot.

This country was founded on the belief that if our government gets too far out of hand we can storm the capital and replace them. I know its a little foolish to think that a coup de tat in the united states is even possible, but that is why the 2nd amendment is there. It's not so we can protect our selfs from our evil neigbors, or go hunting. It is so we can keep our government in line.
I saw Katrina mentioned earlier and I thought it was a little ironic considering the spirit of this law is what put a huge kink in the relief efforts. The president did not have the authority to send us troops in to help the victims of Katrina. Same deal we just dont want our government to have that much power. Our troops are sworn to protect our constitution, not our government. Nothing good can come from a president who tries to control people in order to protect them, havent you guys seen "paradise lost" DS9.

A firearm isn't evil it is just a tool it takes a person to kill another person. As a security guard I've seen everything used as a weapon from pencils to hammers to (yes) paper clips. A gun can't pick itself up off a table, load itself and shoot someone. A firearm may be a single use tool but it's just that until someone with intension picks it up and uses it. I for one am a gun owner and an armed guard and in this day and age with criminals able to pick up fully automatics from the black market I would rather keep my right to have my weapon at hand then walked in on someone robbing my building and be dead because I saw them doing it. And yes no matter what the government says every American has the right to rise up and take there country back from an oppressive government.
But with that said I do believe that like driving someone should go through training before they exersize the right to own a weapon.
And last you hear a lot about gun crime but no one ever reports the times when someone is saved because they had a gun. If you really look at the statistics there are times when a gun has saved someone then when a gun was used in a crime.

I agree, safety training should be a requirement.
I still have my tattered, old, NRA blue card; required to get a hunting license (at least, back in the day).
My grudge is who does this traing and certification; I would prefer to let the NRA do it.
If left to law enforcement or some other government agency, no one would ever pass the test.

`If you carn't play nice with your evil death sticks then you should'nt have them. If your nuts enough to want a gun then thats a good reason to stop you having one.
