I would ask myself first off, are they going to retell the original stories or would they do original material? Since it lasted only three years, I think they could do a sprinkling of classic episodes and new stories at the same time. It would be interesting to see effects of some episodes on other stories.

We've added a video test, leaked on YouTube, of the new CGI enhanced Star Trek, on the homepage of the site.

Normally we have videos randomly appear, but we're going to leave this one there for a few days so everyone has a chance to see it.

Please post your comments pro or con on the concept.

Also, regardless of what you think of the concept...will you be watching the new enhanced Star Trek TOS?

Thanks,
:)

I will if they show it on a station I can get. Sucks not having full cable. :(

From what I've read the CGI will be minimal. The CGI Enterprise will move more swiftly in space, plus the old shots of the ship will be enhanced. Planets will look realistic on the view screen and in space. As long as they don't edit episodes to badly, I'm curious to see how this will look on TV. I'll look at the You Tube video later.

After viewing the You Tube video I kind of have mixed feelings. First I don't want the original tampered with but at the same time the episode does look better. Makes you wonder how Star Trek would have looked if Gean was using today's technology. In Enhanced "Doomsday" the damaged USS Constellation floating in space doesn't look like a toy model, and when Spock says "Nothing but rubble and asteroids." you actually see asteroids on the view screen. They do fix that blunder when they show Kirk walking across the view screen, instead of the screen covered they show asteroids and stars as he passes by. Still I have to see an entire episode to make my final decision, if you don't mind these things added, than you might enjoy "Star Trek Enhanced".

The clips of the YouTube "Doomsday" episode was done by Daren R. Dochterman who did work on Star Trek: The Motion Picture Directors Edition. He won't be involved in the CBS project but knows the people that will. You can see more detail and shots on his website.

Personally I'm all for it. Yeah, there's always the classic, un-edited version, and that will always have a place in my heart. But, I think the new FX will be closer to what Gene always wanted in the first place. We'll finally be able to see the original Enterprise take part in epic later-series style space battles where both ships are maneuvering and firing and taking hits, rather than "Scene: Enterprise Shoots" followed by "Scene: Klingon Ship Gets Hit". Maybe we'll also get to see real designs for some of the odd alien ships Enterprise encountered during the series--the ones where they had wanted to design new stuff but always ended up resorting to multi-colored animated cubes and little specks of light off in the distance because they didn't have the budget. So yeah, I like it. If I want the old cheese factor I can always watch the DVDs

I love the idea too. Anything that helps jumpstart a little more excitement in the Star Trek world is fine by me. I miss having a new series out, so this will give me something fun to watch out for.

I'll be tuned in to spot the changes to the original shows. Maybe we should start a thread on all the changes we spot, show by show.

My only concern is how will the effects look when you view it on a TV either in high-definition, analog, or digital for that matter? Will it be painfully obvious next to the old scenes? Guess we'll find out Sept. 16 when its broadcast in 200 stations. The first episode shown will be "Balance of Terror", they say they want to show off the new (CGI) Enterprise in action.

I suppose what we'll see is a little like the "mirror universe" episodes on Enterprise. The effects will not affect the acting (I hope), but we'll see what they would have been able to do if they'd had the budget and technology back in the day.

That said, I would want both versions for historical purposes; what it really looked like, and what the "makeover" did to it. I'm not sanguine about a "Queer Eye makover", but they're going to do it whether the fans want them to or not so I might as well hope for the best.

I am of two minds on this. First, I am something of a purist and really don't like things messed with. OTOH, I DO think Gene would not mind this as a lot of what he did was limited by the budget, as someone else said. Plus, I do think this might open up more young people to the series, and franchise, that some of the younger folks might not have watched before because of the old effects. I am gonna keep an open mind. At least, from a few pics I have seen, you can tell the Enterprise was grey and not white now!

I also have a wait-and-see attitude but from everything I've read the people behind the CGI shots really care about the original series. I hope they don't edit the episodes to badly to make room for the extra shots. I also agree that maybe this is a good move to get people excited about Star Trek again, especially the young kids out there.
